Description: Scholarship is open to students who have completed at least one year of post-secondary education and have at least a 3.0 GPA. Applicant should be on the path to a business or marketing career that will involve online marketing.

Patriot's Pen Competition
Sponsor: Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States
Amount: $5,000
Deadline: Nov. 1, 2015
Description: Competition is open to students in grades 6-8. Applicant must submit an essay on the following theme: "What Freedom Means to Me."

Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition
Sponsor: Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States
Amount: Up to $30,000
Deadline: Nov. 1, 2015
Description: Competition is open to students in grades 9-12 who are enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program in the United States or its territories. Applicant must write and record a three to five minute broadcast script on the following theme: "Why Veterans are Important to our Nation's History and Future."

Young Writers Awards
Sponsor: Bennington College
Amount: Up to $500
Deadline: Nov. 1, 2015
Description: Award is open to students in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. Students may submit a poem, work of fiction (a short story or one-act play), or nonfiction work (a personal or academic essay).

Bluetooth Breakthrough Award
Sponsor: Bluetooth SIG, Inc.
Amount: $5,000
Deadline: Nov. 2, 2015
Description: Award is open to individuals actively enrolled in high school, college-level, or post-graduate school. Applicant must submit a product, application, prototype, or project utilizing Bluetooth wireless technology.

George Montgomery/NRA Youth Wildlife Art Contest
Sponsor: National Rifle Association of America (NRA)
Amount: Up to $1,000
Deadline: Nov. 2, 2015
Description: Contest is open to students in grades 1-12, including home-schooled students. Student must submit a piece of art on a given topic related to North American game bird or animals that may be legally hunted or trapped.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship Program
Sponsor: Jack Kent Cooke Foundation
Amount: Up to $40,000
Deadline: Nov. 3, 2015
Description: Scholarship program is open to high-achieving high school seniors with financial need. Scholars will be selected based on exceptional academic ability and achievement, financial need, persistence, a desire to help others, and leadership.

Prudential Spirit of Community Award
Sponsor: Prudential Financial, Inc.
Amount: $5,000
Deadline: Nov. 3, 2015
Description: Award is open to students in grades 5-12 who are legal residents of any U.S. state or Washington, D.C. Applicant must have engaged in a volunteer activity that occurred at least partly during the 12 months prior to the date of application.

Wholesale Halloween Costumes Scholarship
Sponsor: Wholesale Halloween Costumes
Amount: $500
Deadline: Nov. 4, 2015
Description: Scholarship is open to students enrolled at an accredited two or four year college or vocational school within the United States and be a legal residents of the United States or hold a valid student visa. Applicant must carve a pumpkin and submit photos of the progression of the carving.

Create Real Impact Contest
Sponsor: Impact Teen Drivers
Amount: Up to $1,500
Deadline: Nov. 5, 2015
Description: Contest is open to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia between the ages of 14 and 22 years of age. Student must submit an original work (video, music, creative writing, or artwork) showcasing their idea for a solution to the very real problem of reckless and distracted driving.

Gator Bowl Sports Award of Excellence ScholarshipThe Gator Bowl Sports Award of Excellence Scholarship consists of a one-time gift of $5,000 to one male and one female student-athlete for use at any accredited University or Community College.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTSTo be eligible to receive a Gator Bowl Sports Award of Excellence, the applicant must:

  • Maintain a 3.0+ GPA (on an unweighted 4.0 scale) from an accredited high school inFlorida’s First Coast area.
  • Participate in a junior varsity or varsity sport or its equivalent (dance, gymnastics, etc.)
  • Participate in extra-curricular activities through church, school and the community
  • Pledge to remain drug-free, alcohol-free and tobacco-free
  • Exhibit exemplary behavior, thereby being a good role model for peers
  • Attach Guidance Counselor reference letter
SELECTION CRITERIAThe following factors will be considered in selecting the scholarship recipients:

  • Presentation of application packet – neatness and organization
  • Scholastic record
  • Athletic commitment – participation in varsity, intramural or youth league sport(s)
  • Career goals of applicant
  • Involvement in extracurricular activities
  • Leadership qualities
  • Good citizenship
HOW TO APPLY: Applications are available at area high school guidance departments or can be downloaded directly from www.gatorbowlsports.com. The application must contain a completed application, a Guidance Counselor letter of reference, and be postmarked by Friday, November 7, 2014.

SCHOLARSHIP SELECTIONThe Gator Bowl Sports Award of Excellence Scholarship recipients will be selected by December 15, 2014. The scholarship will be presented at the TaxSlayer Bowl Coaches Luncheon on December 31, 2014 – recipients will receive (4) tickets to the Luncheon as well as (4) tickets to the 2015 TaxSlayer Bowl and will be recognized on-field during a quarter break.

Florida Institute of Technology's New "Colonizing Mars" Program with the Buzz Aldrin Space Institute

The race to reach Mars is heating up with Buzz Aldrin launching the new Buzz Aldrin Space Institute, whose primary goal is to encourage research that leads to the future settlement of Mars. The institute will be located at Florida Institute of Technology (FIT), where Aldrin will join the faculty as a Research Professor of Aeronautics and assume the role of Senior Faculty Advisor for the Institute.
